Default windows AND linux

ok i am currently running windows xp and i was wanting to install linux(i don't know how so it will be awile b4 i learn so this isn't too important lol) but i also want to keep my windows xp and all of my files

so basicaly i just want to add linux to my hard drive so i can boot into linux or windows xp depending on wat i am doing and some other stuff, so yea is it possible just to add linux instead of reformatings and starting with it

and one more thing, if this is possible is there anyway i can switch from windows to linux(and visa versa) from my desktop instead of having to restart everytime i want to swtich

and btw the reason i want linux is because i have some issues with windows but i still like it for the most part, and i have heard that linux is better and it alows more freedom(i don't want to be a slave to microsoft if they up and deside on another conspiracy lol), not becasue i am a wannabe hacker(i have heard that hackers prefer linux becuase of the freedom, i maybe wrong however)and i don't want u to get the wrong idea and not help me, becuase without help i am postive i am not gonna be able 2 do it, so yea please answer me and thanx too anyone that does answer

To have Linux and Windows on the same hard drive you need to make a partition, windows has a utility built in, but i prefer to use Norton PartitionMagic. Once you have a partition (5GB+), then you can install Linux on it, so whenever you boot up it will ask you what OS you want to boot from.

And you cant load Linux from within windows and vice versa, since its a completly different OS, not simply a program that runs ontop of Windows.

It's easy as cake to install, actually running it and getting used to it is the hard part.

Take you time when your doing this or it could go wrong. I had a friend that installed Linux on his laptop and instead of makeing a partition he got rid of windows altogether.
