Default Alternative to Windows Operating system?

Is there another OS that I can use which isn't produced by microsoft?

Is it reliable?

Does it work with most software and hardware currently available on the market today?

Hmm...let me think...just use my signature to find what your looking for. The most predictable answer would be for me to tell you get a Linux OS.
How much computer experience do you have?
If it is limited then I would recommend Mandrake Linux. If your a compitant user I would recommend SuSe Linux and if you are very good with computers and have been using computer for a long long time (were talking years here) then you should already know about the kind of other linuxes out there like Debian GNU/Linux. Ofcourse there are many more distrobutions out there.

It is hard to get linux to run most software made for windows. Some hardware dose not work well either.

1) Linux is another OS - there are many different verison of Linuxs - www.distrowatch.com - is a another good site for linux users

2) Linux is reliable. I find it more stabler and better than windows.

3) For the software, you will need something called a windows emulator (Wine). For hardware, all of the new linux distro come with auto detect. I just installed Ubuntu, the newest verison, on my new computer and it works prefecty.

Just to repeat my myself, there are many different verison of linux for different "needs". If you have a old computer that has a 64 memory, you will need a miminalist linux ( Damn Small Linux or Vector LInux) If you have a more powerful computer that has 128 ram, then you have more option.

PS

Mandrake Linux has changed to Mandriva linux
