It FORCES you to get the update for HL2, plus it unlocks the game files while online. When I had 56k it took me over 10 hours to do everything. My parents were pissed since they missed so many phone calls.

actually i think steam is pretty good.
they do have a great customer support. ok, no program is perfect,.. but i can only say, untill you produce a program wich does the same job better, stop bitching and whining
i mean, steam makes it almost impossible to illigally play the game.
and, it doesnt force updates you can disable them.

nevertheless, when i got this pc, i installed HL2, but when i wanted to log-in, it sayd invalid password..
i suspect somone had slote my account, and changed the password. so i sent an e-mail to valve/steam. i got back a polite request to send a scan of my key, to confirm i bought the game.
so, i sent the scan, and then i got back a e-mail, with my login name, and a new password.

so.. i didnt have any trouble with steam so far

All games you can get though steam you cn also get at your local game store(except third party games, and i think rag doll kung fu), and you can just install that way, without even using steam, although then you cant get new updates and have to play the oldest verson, its still possible.
You sir are very wrong. If you read anything I said you would have noticed that you need to connect to the internet to Unlock game files with Half Life 2.

Edit:

How is this possible? I repeat... You need Steam and an Internet connection to unlock game files in order to run for the first time.

I'll also say this much to those that still think Steam is all that. I payed hard earned cash on a game which went to Valve. But they still reserve the right to say Sorry but you cannot play your game right now! uh... I'm 32 years old and if I wanted to be told what to do I'll move back in with my mother. I don't want to have to wait an hour or so until Valve's Servers decide it's a good time to unlock my frigging game files. So for those that are defending Steam please Tell me why it's OK for Valve to be in control of when I can play? Rather then argue points I don't care about .

Edit again:

If Valve gives my money back and or warn me that they hold the right to tell me when I can play my game then I'll stop bitching. Also who are you to tell me and others to stop bitching? when I have a very strong point.

I say that steam SUCKS "Big-Time."
When I got Half Life 2 last year, when I had 56K internet connection it took 3 whole nights to unlock the game, nex time I'll just get the crack/patch thingy (I own the game anyway so theres no problem)

I actually prefer downloading them all overnight instead of using the cd's. And i have all the cd's too.

And if you install with cd's, its still at around 75% or so and it needs to download the rest anyways.

Well that is Fine and I don't see a problem with that. I would just rather install my game withing a few minutes rather then several hours. I would imaging the Average user would also prefer this. But this still has nothing to do with the problem Steam posses to us users such as not being able to play if you don't have and cannot get to a place with an Internet connection to be able to unlock game files. Also When the servers are busy and you get that nice annoying message saying "Try to play your game later punk" . I don't like being told when I can play when I spend my hard earned cash on the game. Steam Is great for providing updates! Its great for the built in server browser! and it's great for the buddy list and for keeping all your games organized on one location. But we all should admit that needing the Internet to unlock game files for a game that is offline based is dumb. Why should we suffer because someone else stole some game code from Valve that should have been better guarded in the first place.

So tell me people... Why is this fair?

Well.. thats why all the counter strike games say "online access requires to play". You shouldnt buy them if you dont have internet

But i do hear what your saying, if i bought the game not knowing you needed internet to validate and install it, then i would be pretty pissed off.

Yes but that is why my topic is not about CS but rather Half Life 2. I'm desperately trying to keep the discussion geared towards the original post where Steam is crap and should not be needed to unlock game files to an offline game .
