A laptop Server

This is just a question I wanted to find more info on. I was going to get a server for my business and want to know if it was possible to have a laptop act as a server. If so would you need something other than windows 2003 server. I may put linux on it, so would linux work on it.

In summary:

1) is a laptop server doable?
2) Are there going to be any fallback (run-time, loading software, and the such)
3) Will Windows 2003 server work on a laptop server?
4) Will Linux work on a laptop server?

I will try to answer
1) yes
2) Not really, depends on the laptop
3) Yep
4) Yep

The downside is that a notebook is not secure. Someone could easily walk off with the notebook. You can not make a headless server ( no KB , MOUSE , VID ) like you can with a desktop. You can not add extra HDs , unless they are external. You are limited to HD capacity, I think that 80 gig is the highest , practical capacity price wise. Then for what ever server you select you need to go to the web site of what ever notebook you select and see if they have drivers.
Also you want to see the max ram the notebook will take, they are not like PC's , some do not take as much ram.
I know I should not say this , but why ? just to have a notebook server, I can not see any practical reason over using a desktop.

I dont really think that is a consideration do you? someone could walk off with your atx case. If you want security lock it up, we are obviously going for cheap here or he'd get a server rack which locks

Irrelevent, the only reason you run it headless to to cut down on size (and maybe power) but a notebook is already smaller and uses less power.

Even with 5 externals you are still smaller than an atx case

You dont know what he is doing, 80gig maybe be more than enough for a non file/db sever

Eh, no more than you do for any other computer, do you think xp/linux installed on a laptop has less drivers than an install on a desktop

Some laptops have limits, so do some desktop mobo's. And again ram is not really a huge factor in many severs

Size, power, noise, mobility, and the fact you have one lying around

no, a notebook is far easier to take then an ATX case
and when is a notebook cheaper than a desktop

the reason to run aheadless server is so no one can walk up to it sit down and hack it.

yes externals that can get knocked on the floor or someone can walk away with, plus if it is usb, you more then likely ca not put a pagefile on the HD.

no and you do not know what he is doing either

Some notebooks max out a lot sooner in ram capacity , you can not put as much ram in.

you also with a notebook, can not take advantage of multiple processors

also I would recommend , IF lormord goes ahead with his project, not to close the lid, because of heat build up.
