i dont really know yet. im keepin the monitor but i might give it to my sister or i might sell it. so my solution is 2 buy like a X2 4200+ or something like that then to buy a newer mobo and cpu when they become available.

well future games are gonna be in dual threads so a X2 would be good for those,
tru

but right now FX's are better at gaming
tru also but you wouldnt really notice the difference between a X2 4800+ and a Fx57 in game(look in CPU 101 it explains it)

thats seems like a good plan. then if it turns out you dont like the new CPU's or that they are too expensive you would still have a great computer.

this is my comp that im building, im gonna be ordering the pieces and just wanted ur opinions.
1. Make sure you have a good PSU. see PSU 101.
2. Well if you're getting that, then get serious RAM, say Mushkin Redline or OCz VX

Quote:
does anyone think i shuld wait and get the fx-60 or watever.
Would it matter if you did?

Quote:
Well it looks like youve got money to burn, so it might be better of waiting until the new generation of cpus arrive, they will be expensive tho.
1. Assuming of course you consider the current system inexpensive
2. Well, you can always wait for a newer generation of chips....

Quote:
i will get one now and another one down the road
1. You do realize when the next gen chips come out, they will singlehandedly outperform your twin cards right?
2. You also do realize that, your mobo wont do SLI straight out of the box too right?

Quote:
im doin a lot of gaming so shuld i buy like a 3700 or something of that nature and wait for the nicer cpus to come out and get those?
1. Generally speaking, "if you have to ask, then you're not going to notice a performance difference"
2. As for gaming, AMD and AMD-gaming in general is not often cache-bound so a 3700 isnt even neccesary. The extra half-meg of cache will result in a performance delta you'll damn near never experience

Quote:
wat could u reccomend for a good processor that will play any game i throw at it high settings
1. It's spelt "what"
2. Sorry, you wont be able to play every game at high settings, no matter how much money you throw at it.

Quote:
an OC'd 3000+ will meat or exceed the preformance of an FX55.
1. That's a load of wishful thinking. Granted you can get a 600MHz overclock if you know what you're doing out of a A64-3000 but to assume that every single A64-3000 can do so would be plain silly -- as would be comparing to the performance of a stock Athlon64FX ... something akin to suggesting that a person who is running would be able to outpace a stationary Ferrari ... true? Yes. Pointless? At least partially.
2. Do not that I'm not suggesting that the idea of buying a lower end chip and overclocking it is a bad one -- just dont expect to be able to hit the high overclocks other people can get and do realize that the FX chip will overclock better

Quote:
Not to mention u could also get a really good hsf for it and also be ready to OC the next gen. processor u'll likely be getting
1. Thats plain silly. I would sincerely like to see an average K8 chip overclock to the point of being able to seriously threaten a comparable K9.....
2. Given the cost of a FX57 and 2xGTX, the cost of a heatsink is somewhat inconsequential

Quote:
i dont really have much of a budget but it has to be generally reasonable.
Sounds a lot like someone isnt buying their own computer

Quote:
i like the X2 but i dont think they wuld be best for gaming.
Again, no offence intended, but if you have to ask, odds are you wont notice the difference
Quote:

Future?

Quote:
You should look into a PPU (physics processor) along with your GPU's, even thought they're not out yet you can add them on later.
I'm glad you realize that the arent yet out yet. Also do realize that they may not even be neccesary given recent comments by Havok

Quote:
They're a nice addition and mes should be taking advantage of them in a few years.
In a few years, the system is going to be horribly osolete (in the context mentioned above of runniing everything at 'high settings')

Quote:

1. Good PSU as I mentioned before
2. Good RAM as mentioned as well (not to say what you've picked isnt good -- just that it doesnt meet the bar set by everything else)
3. Since you dont have a budget, SCSI drives

Whats the budget? You need to nail it down to a number cuz if you dont ill start racking up local RAID5 SCSI boxes with 8TB auxillary NAS...

OMFG!!! 6-7K dude!! That's huge! If you sure you're gonna get a PC with that money, it'll be a good one. 2x 7800GTXs 512 MB surely fit in with a X2 4800+ and 2 gigs of uber-low latency ram coupled to a Vapochill cooling setup. Wow.

There are a few things worth mentioning here (no offence intended by any of this really)
  1. You know virtually jack-all about computers or
  2. You have no concept of the meaning/value of money or
  3. You're really loaded (rather, you're parents are) or
  4. This must have done really well in school this term (or really poorly in general)

But for that kinda budget, assuming you're not getting into server setups,

CORE
- AMD Athlon64 X2 4800 [S939, Toledo, ADA4800DAA6CD, $790]
- ASUS A8N32-SLI DLX [$250]
- BFG 7800GTX 512MB [$750]
- BFG 7800GTX 512MB [$750]
- OCz PC3200-EL VX 2x512MB [CL2, $185]
- OCz PC3200-EL VX 2x512MB [CL2, $185]
- Plextor PX-740A [$60]
Core Subtotal = $2970

STORAGE
- Hitatchi Ultrastar 15K147 [16MB, 80p, 15000, $190]
- Hitatchi Ultrastar 15K147 [16MB, 80p, 15000, $190]
- Hitatchi Ultrastar 15K147 [16MB, 80p, 15000, $190]
- SCSI 80p to SCSI 68p convertor [$10]
- SCSI 80p to SCSI 68p convertor [$10]
- SCSI 80p to SCSI 68p convertor [$10]
- LSI Logic LSI00008 PCIEx1 RAID5 controller [$620]
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 500GB [16MB, SATA3.0, $370]
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 500GB [16MB, SATA3.0, $370]
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 500GB [16MB, SATA3.0, $370]
- ARECA ARC-1210 PCIEx1 RAID5 Controller [$390]
Storage Subsystem Cost = $2720

COOLING & POWER
- Vapochill Lightspeed [$860]
- PC Power & Cooling 850W SSI [$440]
Cooling & Power Subsystem Cost = $1300

Net cost = $6990

Hows that for a start Lots of room to expand too (I trust i made my point about budgets?)
