Default Laptop overheating problems

I have a Sony Vaio 2.4 ghz that's 3 years old. During the last year or so as I run more intensive programs(games, videos, etc) the computer will run harder and harder sounding like a plane is about to take off. Then it just shuts off and I have to wait until it cools down before I can start it up again.

Does this sound like I have a fan issue or is it because my computer is getting old. I already have a crappy fan it sits on to cool it down, but it's not doing the job. The only way I can burn a cd is to sit the laptop on top of my air conditioning vent to keep it cool.

Any suggestions aside from buying a new laptop?

It sounds like your DVD/CD drive is causing that sound and on a number of occasions with notebooks, I've seen the optical drive heat up the entire computer.

Try using a program like Alcohol 120% to make an image of the game on your notebook and run it off of your hard drive so your DVD/CD drive is not used.

You can also get this cool device that sits under your notebook and cools it off. http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/Cool....aspx?pid=1082

you should definitely check the fan it may just be dusty or it could need replaced also make sure the air vent is not obstructed.

they are much better. i dont have a cool master, but i have a similar brand. the fans on mine are really quiet and my system fan hardly ever runs much anymore except under heavy load. you should really get one.

my best guess right now is are fans that are blocked off by dust. remove the fans and give them a good dusting. i do that atleast twice a year.
