Default Toshiba 2655xdvd screen stays black

My laptop screen is black and cannot see anything. Locally our computer retailer states it is more costly to fix than purchase a new one. Tried F5 and control and also tried the screen cutton closure to make sure it's not stuck.
Someone said on the computer forums you can purchase a backlight and replace fairly cheap or send to a shop fairly cheap. Any Help!!!!!!

The problem is that it probably doesn't even matter what is wrong with your screen:
if you take/send it back to the manufacturer, they're not going to bother with finding out what's wrong: they'll just install a new screen and charge you big time. Or they won't bother at all and just send you a new one (in case it's still covered by a warranty... no computer manufacturer will take the time to actually find out what exactly is wrong... just sending you a new one is way cheaper).
You local computer retailer is correct: unless it's a really small, easily-fixable problem, you're screwed (unless it's still under warranty). And still: what is easy to fix about a laptop screen...?

And laptop screens are LCD's... no "backlight" there... so forget about that option.
