im new to soundcards and stuff and i just got a new SB Live! 5.1 soundcard OEM
i first disabled the onboard sound then stuck the card into the pci slot, then turned on my comp. it got to the desktop, and then after maybe, 20 seconds or so, my computer freezes and locks up. then only way to fix this is it restart with the card out of my case. specs: ecs 865-pe motherboard (intel based) pentium 4 2.4ghz 533FSB 1gb ddr400 dual channel RAM (in performance mode) xfx geforce 6600gt 128mb agp winxp pro sp1 western digital cavier 120gb hard drive there is also one wireless internet card taking up one space of the PCI slots. someone mentioned something about an IRQ conflict. im not sure what that means.... any ideas? |

IRQ conflict is when two devices try to occupy the same system resources. You get it most commonly between PCI devices. Try pulling the wireless card and installing the sound card. If that fixes it, then it is an IRQ conflict. Once you get the sound card running and the drivers installed, download new drivers for the wireless card and try installing it into a different PCI slot.

ok, now, I installed the drivers, and when at about 95% (no IRQ conflict), and says updating windows drivers, it freezes my comp. I tried 3 times and the third time it worked. I then rebooted and it said that the drivers were not properly installed. I used driver cleaner pro to clean the drivers out, and it did the same thing again. I'm not sure what to do now....

even tho it's not saying IRQ confict, pull the wireless card and try it. Also move the sound card to a different PCI slot and see if that helps.
I installed a pinical capture card on my research computer and it did the exact same thing. I pulled the other capture card and it worked like a champ.
