Default Steam product activation causes problems

I just bought the CSS, DODS, HL2DM pack for 25€ at a store. When I come home and try to activate it, Steam says I have to insert the DVD and install CSS. The problem is I don't have a DVD drive. I thought I could just buy the game, activate using the serial key and download the files from Steam. Man this is annoying, the only "option" is to buy a DVD drive. If there are any other options I don't really mind getting info on them, but I'm gonna have to buy a DVD drive anyway.

You have to instal first then activate as far as I know. After that you'll be able to download in the future. I could be wrong.

Edit:

Also just run out and by a DVD rom. they cost what $30.? I would have figured everyone had one by now. Hell just buy a dvd burner combo drive and you'll be able to do anything.

I'm thinking about getting this
http://www.digicomp.fi/product_info....ucts_id=171357
It seems pretty nice. I don't know if it can burn Double-Layer DVD's but what the hell, probably won't need it for a while. Then I'll just have to order about 100 DVD discs from Germany, they're very cheap when ordered directly from there, no middleman taking money. Here in Finland DVD discs are kinda expensive.

You will need to get a DVD drive. I had to do the same thing when I got HL2.

Getting this one
http://nordic.lge.com/fi/prodmodelde...-4163B&model=4
(site in Swedish and Finnish, sorry) costs 50€. Seems like a pretty damn good one. Burns double-layer DVD discs too, which is a nice feature I will be making use of.

you don't have to install the cd. You just go to www.steampowered.com to download steam. click on where the bar says click here then download it and install it. Then make a users name. Also click on activation in the game section of the steam. (By the way steam is free only if you have the cd key.)

Its understore. on the bottom lower left cornor where it says something like " activate a product on steam." If this doesn't help aim me at Tsang95 and I'll walk you through it. thanks Raditz.

That's exactly what I've been doing, here's the message I get when I try to activate using the serial key I have.
"Please install Counter-Strike Source before continuing.

Installation of Counter-Strike Source is required before continuing.
Please insert your Counter-Strike Source CD/DVD into the drive and select 'install' from the autorun menu."

I knew I would have to buy a DVD drive someday, and that day is close now. Perhaps monday is the day.

that's correct
unless you download steam and buy from them, then they have you download the game. Although im not sure if they send you a cd-key to activate yourself or if they just activate it for you.

mrjack and Zhuge Liang didnt you notice a sign on the box of the game that said PC DVD? b/c it should say that on the box and if you knew you didnt have a DVD rom then you should of gotten the box that said PC CD-ROM on it instead. its usually on the front or side of the box.

They only had the DVD-version. And I think that's the only version, I think they meant the CD version of HL2 when it says "CD/DVD" in the message. And I'm getting a 44€ Double-Layer DVD burner now.
