What do you need it to do? If you're just looking for an mp3 player with a large storage capacity and general good looks...don't go for the ipod. They are overpriced, and you can get better players with more space for less money.

If you need to watch movies on it, or FM radio, or record music...list what you need here and i'll try to find one within your budget.

What is a "pmp" ?

I was looking at getting myself this http://www.cowonamerica.com/products.../x5/photo.html

It's slightly over your budget, but maybe you can stratch it? They have a cheaper 20GB version thats right at $250. (this is 30GB version) It'll play alot of file formats, including movies an music, and can play/record live radio, etc. it's got a lot of features...

For $300 the 30 GB iPod video is nice. My friend jsut bought one and they have amazingly vivid screens. The screen is something like 2.5" across and quite nice. I tested it out at the local Apple Store. As a personal media player, (PMP), the other good choice close to your price range is the iAudio X5, the one 4W4K3 showed you I think.

I am hoping the price of the iAudio X5 goes down at least a small bit before I buy it, it seems like alot of money to me. But really I suppose i should pay more for the player, since the music and movies I will be putting on it are mostly from friend's CD's and such.
