Do you mean the actual frame of the house? Usually yes, they are going to be wood. I would think stone would be very fragile, wouldn't it?

depends when the house was made and what part of the country. Yes , most houses are "framed " with 2 by 4's ( wood) then sheetrock ( sheets of plaster for the inside walls and plywood and aluminum for the outside) The house I live in was built in the early 50's. it is made of brick ( like the 3 little pigs) has a steel "I" ( eye) beam running through , under the floor. No sheet rock, hand applied plaster for the walls. I heard the house sold for $14 k when it was new...and is now worth aprox $250k.
If the house is in a snow area building codes dictate a stronger roof
no snow more design like restaurants with tinted glass roofs..etc

stone are usually more expensive older houses...the new big houses they build much like the smaller ones

Yup. As someone said earlier there 2-3 bedroom apartments in NY or California can cost in the upper $200K or beyond, wher here in Texas that will buy you a 2000-3000sq. ft. house. Here apartments can be had for $400-$600 a month, very cheap.
