So you can access sites fine? but theres no connection symbols in the bottom right hand corner.

My network places/ View Network Connections/ Right click on the connection/properties/ (down the bottom) Show Icon in notification area when connected

Hope that helps

do u have broadband or dial up?

im guessing dial up since u seem to be manually connecting to the internet?

is there a software? or do u just set up a connection through microsofts connection wizard?

u shouldn't be worried about it then.. broadband.. is always on once u turn on your pc in most cases.. try hovering around the taskbar area and making sure hidden uninactive icons are shown.. see if you see a little computer with like two horizontal lines below it.. but as long as its working.. u dont really need to worry about it
