Default connection not working

I got my broadband today and installed the cd and connected everything into my DELL but it didnt work, but yet when I set it up on my laptop it works brillantly. On the front of the router it has a light that shows that the line is connected when I turn on my Dell the light turns on but when it comes to the windows xp screen it goes off and I just cant get it to connect and yet my old laptop is working fine what could be happening? Im getting a usb adapter for the wireless and hoping it will work then what could be wrong with the network port on the back of the computer?

Go to device manager and see if your network card is installed ok, you can also download the lastest drivers from it's manufacturer and update it, then reboot and try your connection. Also, do you have Norton/symantec on that computer? if so, what version?

Sounds like some serious corruption going on there. Try downloading Service Pack 2, burn it to a cd or somehting and then install it on your desktop, see if that helps. If not you may have some serious hardware issues to resolve before going any further...
