Default surge protector question

what is recommended when selecting a surge protector?
the packages have a wide range of joules - from 70 to 1500 - so what is really needed for a computer?
thanks

I would be a good idea to have a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). It lets your computer stay on when the power goes out for a number of minutes (usually 10-15).
http://www.tigerdirect.com/Applicati...&Sku=T105-1158 For only $34.99 this isn't too bad a deal. Or better, go to a local store, then you won't have to pay shipping. Mine has saved my butt a couple times. Believe me, you won't realize how worthwhile it is until the power goes out

I've been wanting to look into what kind of battery you would need to have a desktop PC run out your car for extended periods. That would be sweet, pull over to the side of the road and do some gaming

That isn't a UPS, its just a normal surge protector. If you decide to go with a normal surge protector, they are really all the same, so it doesn't matter too much.
