Sound Card Not Working

My sound card and speakers are not working. Whenever i try to play a song i have saved on my harddrive a message comes up saying Soudn Card not working. The songs wont even start to play and no sound will come out of the speakers. I have tried to upgrade the drivers and that did not help. Any suggestions?

do you use the onboard sound or do you have a standalone sound card?

did you set your audio device to the soundcard you plugged the cord in?

I am using the sound card that came with my dell computer. The sound has worked since i got the computer about 2 years ago. It stopped working all of a sudden a few weeks ago.. Ive tried updating the driver but that didnt work
