Default Comp Not Detecting CD & DVD Drives

Hi, my computer was working perfectly fine. Suddenly I put a cd in and my CD & DVD drives weren't detected on my comp. Just a few hours earlier they were, and I was listening to music. I rebooted and they still weren't being detected. I've run virus & spyware scans and I don't have anything. I did a system restore, and that worked for a few days, but now it's back to not detecting my CD or DVD drives. I already looked in my device manager and they're not listed there. Please help.

I have Windows XP.

None. Never moved my comp or anything either. And my cd player & dvd player are opening and closing fine.

Could this be related to xcp.rookit? You know, that's what comes with those Sony/BMG copy-protected cds. My spyware did detect that earlier and blocked it. I read that some people's cd drivers were rendered useless when they uninstalled the xcp.rookit, but I've never attempted to uninstall it, so I doubt it's related to that. The timing is suspect though.

Well there have been many reports of people's comps crashing after they uninstalled it, so I don't really want to do that...

Supposedly Sony is coming out with a way to safely uninstall it. Looks like I'll have to wait for that in order for my drives to work again? Maybe that's not what the issue is though.

Could be, instead of blocking it, unblock it and go to sony, they have a uninstall for it now!!
