Default MSI MB w/ USR modem dropping call & connection speed problem

Have an MSI 6553 MB with a USR5610B internal PCI modem. Running WinXP, SP2, 1.7GHz Celeron P4 processor & 2GB RAM. Reviews of this modem on other web sites mentioned a "dropped call" problem. Two reviewers had MSI botherboards.

1. Modem works great when it works but drops the call often. Doesn't disconnect from the internet, just get "Page can not be found" message. Redialing works until it drops call again. Found initialization string for a USR2976 with similar problems. String is (AT&F1&K3S15=2S11=38S27=16S0=0) no parenthesis. This helps somewhat. Still drops call but not as often. Also, pages sometimes don't load completely, need to refresh to get entire page. Connection speed dropped from 45KBPS to 26KBPS. Surprisingly, didn't notice significant drop in how long it took to load a new page.

2. Without using the above string, occasionally connect at 31KBPS but it takes so long for page to load it is useless. Redial, get 45KBPS and pages load as fast as a dial up is going to work. Am told reported connection speed has more to do with the connection to my ISP and not with how fast pages can be download from the internet. My guess is connection speed to ISP has got to affect download speed.

3. Have the ISA version of the same modem in another computer and have no problems. Does anyone know of an initialization string that will correct the dropped call problem AND allow me to connect at 45KBPS?

4. If not, does anyone have a rocommendation for a modem that will work with an MSI MB? High speed internet is not available in rural Maine.

5. Can someone explain just what the connection speed your modem program reports really means?

Thanks,

Tom

Any PCI modem should work.

I feel bad for you
I honestly have no idea what to do about the rest of the problem, but try a new modem. If that doesn;t work, then it has to be a problem with your computer, isp, cord, or whatever else.
