Do you have any preferences? Are you looking to overclock or do you just want all stock hardware?

Really there are a million different setups you could configure, $1000 is morethan enough to get you a killer machine. Here's a quicky setup that will be affordable...

AMD Opteron 148
DFI Ultra-D
2GB PC3200 (or faster DDR)
7800GT
Case
SilverStone powersupply
WD 80GB SATA HDD
DVD/CD burner/player

that shuld be way less than $1000, and you can either upgrade or get better quality brands to your liking. www.newegg.com has great prices, but really that's one of maybe 100 different configs you could pick from, no point in getting detailed until you are more specific on what you need. Maybe list desired features, necessary HDD storage space, do you need a burner or not, want an LCD? etc.

Well if your looking to overclock this is a very "tweaker" oriented setup:
Motherboard: DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 SLI-DR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136157
CPU: Athlon 64 3200+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103535
Memory: OCZ EL Platinum Revision 2 (2 x 512MB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146890
Video card: XFX Geforce 6800GS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150118
Hard drive: Maxtor MaXLine III 250GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144185
PSU: Antec TruePower 2.0 TRUECONTROL II-550 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103933
DVD burner: Pioneer DVR-610B http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827129169
Floppy: Samsung floppy http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16821103203

Total = $973.16 - $18 rebate... No case because thats an opinionated thing.

Thats if your overclocking alot, if your not, you could skimp on the motherboard, RAM, and PSU and save money.

If you're gonna give a parts-breakdown, try and actually check to make sure that it's less than the budget spec as well as listing somewhat precise parts (i.e., "Silverstone Powersupply")

- Athlon64 X2-3800 [ADA3800DAA5BV, $320]
- DFI NF4 Ultra Infinity [$95]
- Rosewill 2x512 [CL2.5, $70]
- Maxtor MaxLine III 250GB [16MB, $100]
- NEC 3540 [$40]
- XClio 450W [12V@32A, $50]
- Albatron 7800GT [$290 after $50MIR]
Subtotal = 965USD

With room for a case
