For XP I recommend minimum 512 MB RAM. It will run on 256 too, but slowly. With 512 MB RAM you'll have no problems with all those programs.
If you just want to try it, leave the hdd file system to be FAT32 (don't convert it to NTFS). Doing so you could reinstall win98 without loosing your data.
