i do some media stuff in that area too, and i know it can take some power to do it smoothly (or smoothER rather). progs like 3dsmax, adobe after effects, photoshop cs2, etc. benefet alot from the amount/quality of the ram. like said before, 2gb of RAM would be good to have. a nice gfx card is important for 3d work if you do any of that, but otherwise a low or mid card will suffice. I'd recommend an AMD dual core processor (doesnt everyone nowadays?) and a nice mobo to go with it. there are so many mobos out there that you'll probably just get alot of people saying that there's is the best, so it would be good to check out some reviews (newegg.com has good prices and reviews for hardware). it all depends on how much you want to spend. the amd x2 3800+ will be a significant difference in performance for you, but if you have the cash you may want to fork out for a 4400+. You'll definitely want to replace your RAM, unless you have good ram you want to add onto. RAM isn't just RAM, its performance varies alot and old RAM doesnt have the lower latency timings of the more recent RAM. I'd say that for video rendering and image work, memory is the second most (just behind the processor) important part of the system.
