Hey I have been using Linux for a while.
I suggest using Zenwalk from www.zenwalk.org but there are some drawbacks

Some of your hardware will fail or stop working (such as my Gigabit LAN Controller)
You can download the files but you need to burn them to a CD (Burn Image)

You spoke about booting from a CD these are called Live versions.
If you want to talk some more please get in contact with me via PM

I would recommed ubuntu.
If you want to get a free cd of ubuntu, go to https://shipit.ubuntu.com/. You have to register first, but with the shipment you can get a installation cd and a live cd for free.
