Default Extending Wireless Range via Access Point

I have a linksys gateway and it's wireless coverage doesn't reach all parts of my house. Would buying an access point extend the network if I connect it to my gateway with an Ethernet cable running through my house? An ethernet cable connects into the back of the access point and then it's sending out a wirelesss signal? Also, will computers cnnected to the access point be on the same network as the gateway wireless. THey must be the same network right?
