Gateway restart loop affter XP install of OS

BIOS updated, upgrade to XP Pro SP2 from ME. Shortly after O/S install, when system shutdown is selected, the PC shuts down then automatically starts back up. Each time the shutdown is selected it starts up again. To shutdown PC, the power plug must be unplugged.

This is a Gateway Select 1100.

I’ve disabled the automatic shutdown switch, power management and HKLM autocrash has been set to 0.
Any suggestions?

check bios for something like "power on after power fail" or something like that. It is possible that your bios sees the shut down as a power fail and is turning back on afterwards, doesn't make it correct but may be a solution
