Default dumb question...

where is the OS stored? i would have to guess...duh...the hdd. so, im having a problem with a password in windows 2000, aka i dont know it, and i was wondering if i just installed a hdd from another computer complete with everything, would this solve my problem? basically, the computer was from some office, i dont have the password and never will, so right now its useless. i was wondering if switching hdds would do it. thanks

If you don't have hte password, then you're pretty much out of luck, there. If there isn't anything of value on the hard drive, you could format and reinstall Windows.

There are ways around the passwords, but that would be a function best left to your IT department, if this is a work computer.

I thought this site didn't have anything to do with hacking, but either way I would definitely go for reinstalling windows, unless you're actually trying to crack into your exgirlfriend's computer

ok, well...to clarify my situation. i have a couple of computers that some place no longer needed. however, i cant get on them because they need a password. i dont HAVE these passwords, nor will i be able to GET them. im not concerned with logging on specifically to that user: if i could make my own that would be fine. if this makes any difference, which i hope it does, any assistance would be helpful.

Saying you can not get the passwords makes me a bit suspicious... Why are you unable to get in contact with someone from where you got them? When my boss gives away old computers he always changes the administrator account password to password.

Go out and spend some money and purchase a new OS and get a license for each machine.. or try Linux....

well im sorry that youre feeling suspicious. the reason why i cant get in contact with anybody is because theyre computers my dad had from several years ago that were given to him by some office that was relocating or something. the reason why i came here for some help was exactly the opposite of what you suggested: to save some money. i would have LIKED to just use the computer...whats on it is totally irrelevant to my interests. the real thing i want to do is just be able to use it, NOT see whats already on it and play around with it. keep in mind, im just an 18 year old goin to school who wants to play some games in my free time...
