Default what happens if your chipset overheats?

i was wondering it that is causing why if you leave the computer on 24/7 it lags lags as when you run something it takes a little longer than usual for it to launch and yet you hear no disc activity. or is it the ram?

so i guess it has to do with the psu, well i havent tried leaving the other computer running 420watt 24/7 yet hopefully that will not happen as there is only a couple devices plugged in.
