Auto Voltage Regulator

What is real fuction of this stuff ? It would be a part of most of the desktop computer when bought . Is it use to maintain the balancing of the power supply ? Is it important to use ? I have one but broke after 5 years used. Where should I find this thing, in Computer store or electronic shop ?

Need more information... what, exactly, do you see that has the term Auto Voltage Regulator attached to it? Provide links, if you can.
