System does not want to shut down

Hi,

Have a Toshiba Satellite 1135-S155 with Windows XP.
When I hit "Start, Turn Off Computer, and Turn Off" nothing happens.
Did a Defragmentation, and still nothing happens.
What do I do, short of pushing the "On Botton", that would put the laptop in to the "Stand By" Mode.
Please help, thank you very much.

press ctrl+alt+delete and start closing all the processes, then try again. This might not fix it but it's a start

In simple terms, you may have a lot of junk still running, maybe from adware or a bunch of programs still running (example: instant messengers and other tools in the taskbar or things you dont know about). A simple thing you can do is clean it out. Do a restoration on it. You'll have to back up your stuff first, because you're gonna lose it.

I know the solution shouldn't be "hey wipe it out", but its the easiest when voicing over a forum. Most of the time users encounter these weird instances and dont know what to do. The thing to do without a lot of headaches is to clean it out and restore it to manufacturer settings. After that, try to update your Window's system and your virus checker. Tada! Brand new system.... kinda.

Thank you very much for your help. First I did "ctr, alt & del" and nothing happened. Then I did a restoration to an earlier date, and now it is working fine. Hope it will stay that way. Sorry to be such a dummy.

While its working, do some adware and spyware scans, and uninstall unessary programs.

a good thing to remember when installing new progs is to read all the little check marks. there are a lot of them out there that will start running when the comp it powered up and if you have to many of these that are needlesly running it makes the log off a huge and long ordeal. there is a dos setting you can go into to look at what you have running at start up and i think it is msconfig. not sure though so see what someone else states about the command.
