i was thinking about upgrading my os on my secondary comp to xp. my quesiton is, if i do this, will i lose my data thats on that comp? also what would happen with my network? like would it be affected since one computer is being changed?(files in the shared folder)

yeh, everything would be lost, unless you bought an upgrade edition(which i don't reccomend), but it would be relatively simple to just copy all you files over with a small network, and from what other people who use me have said about their experience i would say to do it asap

the xp upgrade will not touch your data, it is a good idea to back up your data first just incase. Alot of people want to do an upgrade because their computer is running slow, because it is infected with viruses , spyware or trojans...they upgrade w/o disenfecting and that is a mistake. There is an upgrade path for windows me ( i am glad to see you are dumping me ) to xp.
I would suggest doing a clean install of xp. Microsoft has a few tools on there site that will check your hardware for compatability. You will also need more ram. Microsoft recommends 128m min, here we put in 256 min. Get the upgrade of xp it is cheaper even if you do a wipe and reload, if you use the upgrade ver on a fresh hd w/o an os..xp will get to a point where it will prompt that it can not find a previous os to upgrade. XP will then ask you to insert your os cd. so do you have your me cd.

i believe you should be ok if you upgrade. windows will store your file in a seperate profile folder and seperate windows folder i believe. but dont hold me to that.

but like previously said, since you have that network going on, its safer to back up some important stuff over to the other computer in case it doesn't go as plan and everything is lost.

If your pc isn't in a bad shape or anything and doesn't have any problems, its good to just buy the full xp, however, if you feel you dont need it, you can just get the upgrade, and you should be ok.
