Default Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2

Is the Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 a good card for someone that does not have anything fancy in terms of 5.1 sound?

I've got an Audigy 2 ZS and it's excellent, but probably excessive if you're not getting good speakers.

Would it be any good for audio production at the beginners end as I am doing first year music production paper next year aswell as video editing. Programs like Fruity loops and cubase would be a few things that I'd use at home whereas the uni pc's are macs. Ive seen a platinum one for sale, it has a remote etc, that add more to it?

It would probably be pretty decent for that, but the X-Fi is much better for audio production.
