borken notebook monitor, please help

I have a Toshiba satellite laptop for more than a year, today I accidently hit on the back of the monitor really hard when the monitor was almost laid on the motherboard. After that I found out the monitor is not working anymore. Basically when I turn on the computer, only the top 1/4 of the monitor shows the correct color, the rest shows noisy signal and i am not able to see the monitor to even log in. I have quite some important files in the computer so I reallly need to repair this one. Could someone give me some suggestion on whether I could fix it by myself, or do I have to find a repair shop to change a monitor? Thank YOu!

is it under warranty??
if it isn't, then you're probably SOL unless you can find a shop with a spare toshiba screen

check around and see what you can find

Basic warranty is only 1 year warranty. As for the hard hit in the back, I doubt it was a connection problem. So i've seen this problem before, most likely you'll have to replace the entire display panel. Depending on the resolution, it can range from $150 to $300+. You may have to think it over if it's worth salvaging. I knew this one girl who decided to keep it as is and just hook up a beat up old monitor to it. Against the reason for getting a laptop in the first place, but oh well...

Thank you guys for the quick reply. Unforturnately this notebook is already out of warranty. I have a spare old monitor and I would not mind to hook it up to the notebook, I tried it but the notebook does not recognize the monitor, when the notebook starts, the desktop monitor shows the window starts screen first, then it turns black and said no input signal. I am not able to access the control panel of the notebook up due to the fact the screen is broken, so am I able to hook this desktop monitor up? Please advise. I really appreciate. It is Sunday today and I have a lot work need to be done on that notebook.

Please help!

Do you have a Function key or shortcut on your keyboard that allows you to jog the signal from your lcd to monitor? Most laptops have this but some will require you to set it up in display properties.

Thank you so much, I tried the function key and now it is up running on the desktop monitor, it looks silly but at least it is working for now.

One more question, do I need to concern about safety issue about the laptop monitor? It appears to be alright from outside but I heard about mercury inside so I am wondeing if that is something I need to be concerned. Thank you a lot for the help.

no you don't have to be worried about running it this way. if you aare still worried then when you do the function F-5 trick to get the set up projection to you monitor just do it I think two times. this will put all the output to the external monitor and none to the lap top one. if you see pics trying to come on your lap top monitor when doing the function thing then next time just do it one less this should run straight external and not both laptop monitor and external.
