This is how Standby mode is supposed to work. Your computer will not overheat. In Stanby all power is turned off except for the RAM. If you have a laptop it would be better to keep the power cord plugged in.
It is usually an option set in the BIOS that a keystroke and/or mouse motion will bring the system out of Standby mode. The most common method of waking from Standby it by using the power button; this way any accidental keystroke (and/or mouse motion) will not cause a power-up.
