and then ran msconfig to close down some of the start-up apps and then restarted the machine.

The problem is that the computer wont re-start, it just cut out and the power went dead

Sounds like you turned off somehing in msconfig you should have not, try starting in safe mode and uncheck everything that you checked and see if it will boot
