Default Audio/Sound Driver/Device/Card problem...not being recognized

I recently reformatted and repartitioned my computer, and re-installed Windows XP. Everything was going great, I got my new monitor set up with a GeForce and everything. Then I realized my sound wasn't working. I went to Control Panel->Audio Devices, and my Device wasn't being recognized (it says there are no devices connected.) I downloaded Everest and it said I have a AC'97 Audio Device, so I went to the Dell Downloads & Drivers site and downloaded the driver reccommended for my computer: "Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC'97 Audio Controller" Well, the device is still not being recognized. I can post a report from Everest if you need it...Please help! I am a programmer and am very experienced with the computer, but I just can't figure this out, and I'm getting very frustrated.
