Default OLD PC = wireless network problems

Hi,
I am trying to get an old 450 Mhz AMD PC to connect to a wireless network, but I am having major difficulties. It is probably too old and doesn't accept a wireless PCI card - I tested two of them. With the first one it wouldn't even start up, and with the second it starts but freezes every time the drivers are about to install. I tried many times, and I finally gave up. Is there an alternative for this PC to connect to the Internet? (There is an unsecured wireless network in range and my friend would like to use it - he has no money for the upgrade of this pc)
Can a usb wireless adapter be used, and if yes, which one? Does it have to be USB 2.0? What other options are there? Thanks
