Default HDD space

i have just brought a new 300gb external hdd but when i plug it into my computer it only shows 279gb. is there something wrong with the hdd?

That sounds a bit low, but should be about right. gigabytes by manufacturers are measured as 1000 megabytes, where they are officiall 1024 megabytes. That addes up...

It's correct - 300GB @ 1000 bytes/KB = 300,000,000,000 bytes.
@1024 bytes/KB = 300,000,000,000 /1024^3 = 279.397GB

Therefore your drive will read as 279GB

As The_Other_One says, hard drive manufacturer's advertise hard drives based on 1000 bytes/KB, whereas Windows (correctly) shows them with 1024 bytes/KB

yea my 250 is really 232... and my 120 is 111.... both seagate by the way.

Wierd tho sometimes two "identical" have different capacities (got two "160s", one has 149, the other 150 )

Dont know, I sold both drives already, was just funny observing that.
