Urgent Request Re-sizing Picture

 I need to get pics onto email urgently and would be most grateful if someone could explain how to re-size my pictures which are currently in 'My pics' (Windows XP) so that I can send them on email. Currently when I attempt to do this it takes forever to load and send. I understand that smaller pics can be sent but don't know how to.
