Default Windows update

I've used windows update a few times and it usually disconnects me. My dad sys it's bad networking or something and he thinks it could be SP2 that disconnected me. My internet is a remote wireless connection by the way. Should I worry about updadting? Is there anything else I can do to secure my connection?

Well I use a Windows XP.That's all I think I can tell you about it. I have IE 6.0 but that's only my secondary borwser. I use Mozila Firefox most. It's thelatest verion of it. I mostly use the Internet for visit forums, downloading videos, reading articles and sometimes looking atporn though I haven't done that in a while. I do try to be careful. I have Norton Anti-Virus, Spybot and Ad-aware. I scan for viruses on new downloads and have it programed to scan my hard drive every week. I still get spyware though. It seems I never actually get rid of it. It doesn't seem to be much to worry about though as I only see low risk files. I did have one problem with Panda Internet Security though. I was unable to log on and I had to format my hard drive, losing everything I had added since my new drive.
