First you figure out what kind of socket your mobo is. I don't know if you screwed up your mobo when you took the CPU off. Did the Mobo have pins or did the CPU? If the CPU had the pins then it's most likely a socket 478. If the mobo had the pins then your CPU was an LGA 775.
