Making Cross-over Cable

Is it possible that after making a crossover cable computer's network connection says "Limited or no connectivity"? And is it possible that just one of the PC's says that? I'm having a problem with a network I built. 1 PC is connected to the internet over USB port and is connected straight to the other PC over crossover. The problem is that the connection is down sometimes. I was able to connect the PC No2 to the internet but couple of hours later not any more.
Any ideas?
