Default dvd and cd-rom problem

I just got a new dvd-rom drive today. When i hooked it up alone with out the cd-rom drive, it worked fine. When I hooked both the dvd-rom and the cd-rom drives up, the cd-rom worked but the dvd-rom did not. I tried both of the IDE cables, or at least I think there called that (it's the second wire that goes to the drives besides the power wire), and that did not help when both of the drives are hooked up. So right now I only have the dvd-rom hooked up so it could work, but I would like both of the drives to be hooked up and running at the same time.
Thanks a lot.

most likely you didn't set one as master and the other as slave, check the jumpers on the back of the drives. Otherwise it is possible that your ATA plug on your motherboard only supports one device
