Default file sharing bw two comps using crossover

Hey folks,
I'll make it simple--I have two laptops (laptop1 and laptop2) and I want to share files using a crossover cable. I set the IP to 192.168.0.1 for laptop1 and 192.168.0.2 for laptop2. So far so good--everything seems fine because I can play LAN games with my brother on laptop2. Also, using the ping method in Command Prompt I get 4 packets sent and 4 packets received. So all this tells me that two computers are indeed connected, but how come I can't share files?
Both laptops are in the same work group, and I DO see laptop2's computer name in "Map Network Drive." I tried turning firewalls (Sygate on one comp and just plain Windows firewall on the other) off on both laptops but I don't think that's the problem.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!

Did you enable file sharing on both PC's?

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...ilesharing.htm

That will explain how if you havn't...DO NOT use XP's file sharing wizard...do it the way that site says.

Thanks for a quick reply, Dave.
Is there any other way to enable file sharing? I don't get the warning saying "Use the wizard to enable file sharing. Otherwise, select Just enable file sharing."

Both laptops have XP Home.

Thanks again.

This is what I've done:
Went to Network Connections folder - Local Area Connection - Properties - Advance - Settings - and UNchecked Local Area Connection.

Is this how you disable ICF? Heck, is ICF the same thing as Windows Firewall?

Thats how you disable firewall/icf. (In control pannel)

Do not use the wizard! The wizard sets unnessacary file permissions under NTFS formatted hard drives (which I'm sure you will have) so that file sharing can't be done sometimes. In my experiance, 90 per cent of the time using the wizard makes it so that file sharing cannot work at all.

Just a few months ago after a reformat i went to set up file sharing and accidentally used the wizard and was unable to get it working...i had to re-reformat and NOT use the wizard...worked great lol..

So...just enable file sharing, doing so does not change the permissions.

After you do everything on that site, make sure that the computers are in the same workgroup.

Then, everything should work out okay.
