Default cd-rw not showing

i have a dell optiplex gxp1 mid tower w/ xp family o.s. i installed a sony dvd rom drive awhile back & had alot of trouble setting jumpers & connecting ide cables correcly. finnally got it working. but when i go into device manager & select drives it only shows dvd & not cd-rw drive. & when i got into my computer it shows d drive & e drive dvd drive. when i load a cd in the cd-rw to play music nothing happens. & when i load one in the dvd drive its plays. it also plays dvds great. i'm just wondering why it does'nt show in device manager.

Well first of all, are you sure you have both of them hooked up properly. Second, did you mess with the jumpers on the cd-rw. And third, did you check your BIOS settings to see if one of them is set as the master, and the other as the slave. Those would be the three things that you'd need to check I'd say. So you might want to look at that and then post the results of that.

I think Dells use the cable select jumper or CS, on their IDE devices. Did you look in safe mode. I had sort of the same, I installed a trial cd burning software. I am trying to remeber the name. After the time limit was up, I removed the program, I remember now... it was Gear, leaves behind a driver that totally screws your pc, I could not burn dvds any more. Did you have this prog on your pc ?
