I want to set up a netwwork between my two dell 4100 and 8400 xp pro desktops using a wired cable modem.Can you give me wire to wire instructions using wizard etc? Please rememeber I am an imbecile!

what type of cable modem are you using
that would be a good start. a nother way is to get a router wich it would be easyer

A router or switch is pretty much necessary, as most ISPs don't let you connect two different computers directly to the modem.
