Default Volume knob question...

I bought a set Altec Lansing VS4121 speakers a while back and so far they sound great. Recently though, the volume knob has been giving me issues. It works still and everything, every now and then though I will notice that if i turn the knob all the way down, sound is still coming out of the speakers. Also when this happens i can turn it up to about 1/4 and still be getting the same, very low volume of sound. It is only until after that that the volume jumps up fast and then increases at hte normal rate.

Could this be a problem with the potentiometer? If so how would i go about fixing it...Or is it possibly something with a sound card or driver getting messed up?

Any help would be appreciated!
