Exclamation How do you Completely remove Thermal Pads?

Hey, to make a long story short, I have wax build up on my CPU, which effects the cooling. How do I get it off? So far I have tried Isopropyl alcohol (70%) and mineral spirits. There is still a very thin layer on there. Any ideas? Can I scrub the CPU? Can I sand it using fine grit sandpaper? Any help would be great.

Derek

Try Xylene, or Acetone and then 91% isopropyl alcohol.

Just make sure you dont use anything less then 91%.

Try stronger solvents but make sure you do a final cleaning with alcohol. Dont use oil based solvents because it fills up the micro pores in the metal. So dont go spraying WD40 on it

Isopropyl 99% works great for cleaning electronics (I clean everything with it)
Use q-tips and make sure you leave no cotton behind

Will the 99% get rid of wax? Thats the main problem. I think I will heat it up and use 99% on it.

Thanks,
Derek

Acetone will take off just about anything and leave nothing behind, beware of the fumes though.

NEVER heat it up. This makes it melt and fill in the micropores. Its imposible to remove it completely once it does this.

Arctic slivers site recomends xylene for cleaning it up. Buy a tiny can of it at your hardware store. Just be carefull with it because its a carcinogen.
