Default Sound Card options

Hey guys, I am looking to add a sound card to my new computer. It's currently running off of onboard sound, which works, but I'd like to improve it. Basically, I want a sound card which will work primarily for gaming. Music sound is a secondary concern, an DVD play/music recording are not factors at all.

This card comes with good reccomendations from my friend, who recently purchased it, but I'm wary of the $300 price tag. I'd be willing to put down some decent cash for great sound, but $300 seems excessive.

Are there any sound cards designed primarily for gaming, or does anyone have any other reccomendations?

No speakers here, just headphones.

That seems to be a nice solution, with a good price in the x-fi series. The more I read about the card, the more I like it.
