Default Sudden Restart

No one seems to be able to figure out my problem (microsoft tech support has no idea).

While surfing (IE) I will click on a link (it seems to be about one in every 20-25, completely random) and my computer will suddenly restart. No warning. It is like I pressed the restart button.

It's not a virus.

I configured the automatic shutdown to give me an error message. All I got was "BAD_POOL_HEADER" and something about dumbing physical memory ???

It doen't happen when the computer is not on the net.

Not doing any file sharing.

First of all dont use IE, use FireFox 1.5. It is way less buggy, easier to use, and it is very extensible.

Probably power supply related. I'd try new drivers first, bios updates if possible, things like that, but yeah, I'm leaning more towards your PSU...

If it is the PSU why does it just happen when browsing?? And only just as I click.

from articles, it sounds like hdd issue. but other articles have the same problem, with regards to other things like games.. etc.. and it can be the service pack issue also. are you using SP2?

if you dont mind trying, you can try the steps listed here.
http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php

there is an article about the BAD POOL HEADER error a couple of scrolls down. but it doesn't seem to provide anything relevant if you want to read up on it.

if it doesn't work. let me know.

The rest of the messages are info only.

SP2 might very well be the problem. however...

microsoft has an article. it sounds like it can be the solution, so if you dont mind, give it a try.

wow. im surprised you actually called. hopefully it was toll free.

i dont think norton is to blame? was it somehow related to the problem? if so please explain.

well, it seems the be like an internal problem. something with your hardware... and again i am kind of thinking that it can be because of service pack 2. if you are willing, you can try uninstalling service pack 2. if it resolves the issue or not, you can reinstall it again.
