40C at idel, Sempron 3100+

Pretty much jsut the title, When my PC is idle, I get 40C on the CPU which is a Semperon 3100+

I have a NICE heatsink and fan, Its rated for a AMD X2 4800+ , brand is CoolerMaster, and its quite too, not that it matters but i ilke it :]

Anyways, I'm prettty sure I didn;t put to much thermal paste on, nor to little, anyone know what the problem might be?

Fan running at right speed? is the fan being blocked by anything or is the heatsink not fit to processor. Is there anythin near to heat sink. IT could be that your computer is runnig to many programs. Start, run> type msconfig. and uncheck any programs you do not need to start when your computer starts. Should lessen CPU load.

CPU load is less then 1% at idel, i have 19program's running and 80mb of ram, IT hsouldn;t be that.

Right speed? I have NO clue. When I look to see what RPM's tis running at it says 0RPM's but I can see it with my eyes that it is infact spinning.....

One of the ram sticks in kind of close to the heatsink....but that even has a heatsink of its own.

And yes the ehatsink fit's it fits on 939 and 754, or so the box says, and it seems to anyways.

i used to have a 3100 sempron and it ran much cooler than this as ou well know. if you are overclocking to around 2.4 ghz i found that the idle temp would hang around this point. i've put too much thermal paste on before and it made no difference to my temps, but it was pretty messy when i removed the heatsink.
if you haven't tried to reseat the heatsink i would remove the fan and see if there's any dirt on the heatsink and clear it off.

i know this sounds odd but my old sempron had a temp reading miscalculation on the board that i had, i removed the cpu cleared the cmos and then put it back in and the temps returned to a "normal" state.

you OCed to 2.4ghz and it was at that temp? I havn't OCed at all...I tryed resetting the cmos... I'll try reseating onc more and see if there is any difference....

out of curiosity, what is the motherboard you're running this on? there is a problem with some boards when detecting the temperatures, particularly abit ones. however on my board the latest bios sorts out the temps.

also has this recently occurred or has it always been like this?

I just put the processeris a few days ago, and its been like that since i put it in.

My MoBo is a ECS NForce 3-A
So far I'm likliing it, looks like is has good bios, esay OCing functions, and the layout looks like it had at least 5 minites of thought put into it like my last one.

for exampel my last mobo has the usb front panel pins irght under the agp slot which was right next to a PCI slot, and i ended up makes littl hooks and pushers with paper clips to get them in, and the cpu fan was on the other side of the mobo then the cpu...uhg it was just poorly diesgned.[/rant]

Just reseated still says 40C maybe there is a problem? or at least the program im useing.

Have you checked to see what the BIOS says the temperature is?
