You really should use a mousepad of some sort, and not just your desk, since some tables use a semi-reflective coating, which can interfere with the optical sensor.

I had a laser mouse, and it didnt work well on glass or plexiglass. But it did work on a few more surfaces, as well as having a higher DPI and being more sensitive. They also dont light up as brightly as an optical mouse does.
