I would imagine any sports store will have a jacket for you... I dont think its necessary to have a special "jogging" jacket, but I see lots of joggers at night with reflective jackets or tape on their back/fronts so cars can see them... maybe thats a good idea

Well difference is a running jacket is lighter, and shows up at night and also has vents for allowing body to breathe...just thought someone would know if a good online site for sporting goods.

on a side note:
Jogging is bad for your knees... Power walking, in the long run, is much better.

Not necessarily, you just have to take care of your body by resting for at least one day per week and getting fitted for shoes depending on your foot type. I'd also suggest starting off with 2 or 3 days per week and then working your way up as you get in better shape.

I run my dogs about a mile sometimes more, sometimes less, ussaly depening on the time i have, and if i was smart enough to eat first. I do that 3-4x a week. Not exactly jogging...but you know I dont use a jacket either, just a sweatshirt since its ussaly cold when i go(late evening, already plenty dark, and having aall bkach dog does not help)

true, but powerwalkers are funny looking.

have you considered bike riding? imo its a lot more fun than jogging, is easier on the body, and you can get in great shape that way too. a bit more expensive though.

The physical act of jogging puts a lot of pressure on the knee ligaments. Light jogging a few days a week will add up over the years. Bike riding also puts undo pressure on the knees...

However, you are correct The Chef. Just like with weightlifting, jogging or bike riding every other day can help reduce the wear and tear your knees suffer from these types of activities...

only if your form is bad. I'm a distance runner and triathlete and I regularly run over 5 miles. I just got back from 8 and did 10 yesterday. I've put about 3 times that distance on the bike in the same time.

As long as you don't go out and start running crazy distance and crazy speed right off the bat, then you shouldn't have knee problems. Yes it may accelerate the wear on your knees, but if it really was a huge problem, why would the primary age of marathon runners be over 50? The health benifits from it also outweigh the risks by far. It's all about allowing your body to adjust to the new demands. That and the occasional ice bath.

So by all means, start running. I don't know what your ability is, but look around online at some training plans.

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

That is a really good beginner plan that will get you up to a 5k. Once you can run that, there are a ton of plans to bring you to whatever level you want. The hardest thing to do is take it slow. The goal is to build up endurance. As endurance builds, speed follows naturally. I could go on really in depth about aerobic vs anerobis, Heart rate zones and slow twitch vs fast twitch, but it's unnecessary.

As for clothing, I don't like to wear a jacket. I prefer to layer. Dry fit (wicking) clothing is your friend. If it is cold out (15-20* F) I will wear an underarmor shirt with a thin fleece top and running tights. It's amazing how little you need to wear to stay warm while running. The run I just did was in the lower 30's (F) and I was comfortable in running shorts, a short sleeve wicking t-shirt and a long sleeve wicking shirt over that. By the end of the run, I had the sleeves rolled up. Since I'm in the US I don't know of any UK specific stores, but most sporting good stores will carry this type of clothing. The basic stuff is fairly inexpensive too.

The one thing you will want to buy and not be too concerned about spending money on is a pair of shoes. Like I said, I know nothing about the UK, but you need to try and find a store that specializes in running. Someone who knows what they are doing needs to see your stride and hwo your foot falls and recomend a set of shoes to you. A properly fitting pair of running shoes is CRITICAL to prevent injuries, such as the knee problems described above.

Might also browse around the runnersworld.com forums as there is really good advice and many knowledgable people on there.

Anyway, good luck with running. It's one of the best habits I have ever picked up. Don't worry about people calling you crazy. I get it all the time. Just remember it will be those people with the beer guts 10 years from now while you are in the best shape of your life. If you have any questions or need any advice, feel free to PM me.

yeah, if you look at it that way, everything puts pressure on your knees. bike riding doesnt as much because pedaling is a much more fluid motion than jogging.
